Velella in Bermuda, Atlantic Ocean

Description and Comments

Mostly just the clear plastic like base & sail structures along the beach. I only found one that had some blue colouration (see attached pic), and that proved to be a useful clue to its identity.
The wind was from the South and there were plenty of stranded Portuguese Men of War, as is the norm at this time of year.
The few folks I spoke to, didn't know what the plastic like structure was, or even if it was part of a creature.
It would be interesting to know from where they originate. The reef on our south shore is only 100 meters off the beach, then it's the deep blue Atlantic. So I guess these may have been home grown or perhaps they sailed from furthur south in the Caribbean or East coast USA ??
I watched your video describing genus and life cycle. Most interesting. Thanks. P
