Jellyfish off of Cape Fear

Description and Comments

A whole swarm of bluish-purple jellyfish, 1-3 inches in diameter with trailing, stinging tentacles 1-2 feet in length, was sighted while diving around 20 miles off the coast of Wilmington, NC. I was told by the divemaster that they were a variety of sea nettle, though I have never experienced blue nettles before.
