Registering for an account is not required to submit a sighting. If you do register, though, you will be able to save you home location on the map, so each time you go to mark a new sighting, you will already be located in the right neighborhood. Registering also lets you review all of your records at once.
The password generator will automatically recommend ultra-high security, but that is probably not required for the purposes of this site.
